The Era’s Variety Gossip 1914 September 30, 1914 At the Oxford on Monday night Mr. Mark Sheridan introduced a new song, “ Here we are again, “ the music by Kenneth Lyle, with words by Charles Knight, which proved to be an instantaneous success. The melody was so catchy that the crowded audience took it up at once, and sang it lustily, more particularly when the words of the chorus were thrown upon the screen. The song bids fair to rival the far famous “ It’s a long , long way to Tipperary, “ as it has just the kind of lilt likely to appeal to soldiers on the march. To the query, “ Are we downhearted? “ there is the stentorian “ No!” and the audience was quite enthusiastic in their support of the assertion that “ when there's trouble brewing, when there’s something doing, “ the English “ Tommy” is the man to rise to the occasion. Mark, who contrives to give point to every l line of the new ditty, can be congratulated on introducing what is sure to prove the recruiting song of the time. It is published by Francis and Day. November 18, 1914 The Sunderland Empire Theatre patriotic week terminated on Saturday, and to say that it was an unqualified success in every respect is an almost superfluous comment. It was a veritable “ self-denial “ week on the part of the management and the artistes. For their part the management handed the entire week’s profits over to the mayor of Sunderland’s Local War Relief Fund, this sum amounting to nearly Ł 600, Mrs. Sheridan’s donation of Ł10 10s. and sales of Mark Sheridan’s photographs presented by himself Ł 26. Mark Sheridan, who headed the programme, handed the whole of his salary of Ł 175 over to this same fund. On Wednesday a patriotic matinee was given, when all the artistes gave their services. They included Wee George Wood, juvenile comedian; Zona Vevey and Max Erard, entertainers;Walter Passmore and Agnes Fraser, entertainers; Friend and Downing, Hebrew entertainers; Tom Jones, Welsh comedian; Nora Delany, comedienne; Gus Garrick, comedian;Frank Hartley, juggler.Mr. and Mrs. Finden, sketch artistes; Brooklyn Comedy Four, harmonising vocalists; Woodward and Page, cyclists; Poppescue Troupe, gymnasts; Goodall and Knox, comedians; Cosgrove and Burns, comedy artistes; the Four Its, juvenile entertainers; Five Olracs, comedy acrobats, Madge Allan, comedienne; Devon and Earle, dancers; and a special war film on the Bioscope. Mr. Sam Wilkinson ably conducted the orchestra. December 9, 1914 Mark Sheridan is making his first appeaarnce this week at the Victoria Palace, where the welcome to “ one of the b’hoys “ is of exceptional character reserved only for popular favourites. Mark is in excellent form with “ Here we are again, “ amd “ Belgium put the Kibosh on the Kaiser.” |
