A lot of making and of experience has gone to bring Mark Sheridan to the top-of-the-tree-position-as-a-comedian which he occupies to-day. He did not tumble into it accidentally. Nobody ever does really tumble into success. Plenty of people would like to think that they could, but they shirk or are ignorant of the trying long years of hard work, beginning at small things and working up bit by bit, that added to innate capacity ultimately bring the successful to any position of eminence that they happen to occupy. So with Mark.

Reviews and Gossip

Reviews from GLASGOW newspapers.

The EVENING TIMES, Monday.January 14, 1918 printed the following write-up on page six, under Dramatic and Musical.

The star comedian at the Coliseum is Mark Sheridan, not this time, as we usually see him, on his own, but as the central figure in a funny musical travesty called “ Gay Paree.”  It is a burlesque  of the popular drama “ A Royal Divorce” with Mark as “Napoleon”.  There are appropriate accessories, including the famous coach, which once belonged to Lord George

The MANCHESTER GUARDIAN says -

The Hippodrome.- “   There are some, not many ,performers who have established an ascendancy in the music-halls which allows them to  exercise certain command over the audience they entertain.  The audience is submissive, though knowing its own final authority, as democracies are known to  have been tolerant of rulers they have set up and can set down again, and it surrenders to the petty dominations of the lordling across the footlights

The Era’s Variety Gossip 1909 and 1913 MS

July 3, 1909
As the curtain went down on Will Cornish’s musical bell act at the Leeds Empire the other night a number of people in the pit  and pit stalls were noticed to be hastily putting up their umbrellas.  The sliding roof was “ off , “ and  the rain was pouring through the joints of the tarpaulin cover.  Roars of laughter  from the gods greeted the scene, as, amid much confusion, the victims below tried to escape.  The tarpaulin cover contained a pool, and when withdrawn the water that had collected dropped on to the occupants of the pit, and

The Era 1910 [ Songs, Writers, and Singers ]

March 19, 1910
Mark Sheridan continues to convulse his audiences all round his provincial tour with his quaint rendering of John A. Glover-Kind’s funny song “ I do like to be beside the seaside,” and despite the vogue of this song in pantomime recently, the original singer is rewarded with plaudits loud and long for his interpretation.  Messrs. B. Feldman and Co. have in “ Seaside” one of the most popular items in their catalogue.

The Era  1913 [ SONGS, WRITERS, AND SINGERS]

January 4, 1913
Mark Sheridan, who is this week making his first appearance at the Palace, Southampton, is scoring all along the line.  He sings , in his own breezy style, “ Colonel Nutt, “ “ By the seaside,” “ If the world was turned upside down, “ and one of Feldman’s latest novelties, “ Who were you with last night?” which is already being whistled all over the southern seaport.  The engagement of the genial Mark is bringing gust to the Palace, for the building is packed out at every performance.  A very good start for the New Year,

The Era’s Variety Gossip 1914

September 30, 1914
At the Oxford on Monday night Mr. Mark Sheridan introduced a new song, “ Here we are again, “ the music by Kenneth Lyle, with words by Charles Knight, which proved to be an instantaneous success.  The melody was so catchy that the crowded audience took it up at once, and sang it lustily, more particularly when the words of the chorus were thrown upon the screen.  The song bids fair to rival the far famous “ It’s a long , long way to Tipperary, “ as it has just the kind of lilt likely to appeal to soldiers on the march.  To the query

MARK SHERIDAN’S  MILITARY SONGS.
As “  One of the Bhoys “  Mark Sheridan has secured a unique place among variety stars, but his newest distinction is that of patriotic comedian, for his present budget of songs all deal with soldiering, and in the way that has made Mark famous. His latest repertoire is headed by what is described as the “ British Army battle-cry,” “ Here we are! here we are! Here we are again!” written by Charles E. Knight and Kenneth Lyle.  Then comes “ Belgium put the Kibosh on the Kaiser, “ a
